When I received the call asking if I’d be interested in participating as a live illustrator for an in-store event at Kate Spade NY, their Gretna branch, Caledonia Park. I couldn’t contain my excitement.
The renowned handbag designer store was hosting a special event, and they wanted me to create guest portraits for their customers. I knew this was an incredible opportunity to combine my passion for illustration with the joy of making people smile.

As an artist, there’s something truly magical about translating moments into art.
The day finally arrived, and I was set up on a custom table within the store. The atmosphere was buzzing with excitement as shoppers enjoyed a glass of bubbly and explored the beautifully curated displays of handbags and accessories.
As the first customers approached, I could see a mix of curiosity and delight in their eyes. How often do you see a love artist in a shop? Many had no idea that they would be leaving the store with a unique piece of art that day.
I greeted each guest with a warm smile, introduced myself, and explained the concept. They would make their purchase in store and receive their free personalised portrait gift. I worked from photos to they were free to go off and finish their shopping and collect before leaving for home.

The reactions were priceless. Some were initially hesitant, but most were eager to take a seat and be part of this creative experience.
What struck me the most was the emotional connection people felt to their portraits. They weren’t just leaving with a piece of art; they were taking home a memory, a keepsake from their visit to Kate Spade. The portraits captured a moment in time, a snapshot of their experience, and customers couldn’t stop expressing their gratitude.
The branch manager’s decision to bring a live illustrator into their store for the day was not only a brilliant marketing move but also a way to create a memorable and unique shopping experience for their customers. It allowed shoppers to engage with the brand on a personal level, fostering a deeper connection.

Other companies can undoubtedly benefit from having a live illustrator at their in-store events. Here’s why:
- Enhanced Customer Engagement: Live illustrators can provide an interactive and engaging experience that sets your brand apart. Customers appreciate the personal touch and remember it long after the event.
- Memorable Souvenirs: Just like at Kate Spade, the artwork becomes a cherished keepsake for customers. It’s a tangible reminder of their visit and a conversation starter.
- Social Media Buzz: Live illustrations are highly shareable on social media platforms. When customers post their portraits online, it extends your brand’s reach and creates a buzz around the event.
- Brand Loyalty: Such experiences create a positive association with your brand. Customers are more likely to return and recommend your store to friends and family.
My visit as a live illustrator at Kate Spade at Caledonia Park was not just about creating art; it was about creating memories and moments that customers would treasure. The surprise of receiving a personalized portrait added a layer of delight to their shopping experience, and it left a lasting impression on them.

For businesses looking to stand out and create a lasting impact, I highly recommend considering the addition of a live illustrator at in-store events. It’s a unique way to connect with customers, foster loyalty, and make their visit truly unforgettable. Kate Spade certainly nailed it, and I’m grateful to have been a part of such a wonderful day of art, fashion, and joy.
