Moving to Uist – Landscape painting in the Outer Hebrides

I’ve recently moved to the Isle of Uist in the Outer Hebrides, Scotland, where I am now working as an artist.

This move marks a new chapter in my practice and has naturally shaped the direction of my work.

Uist is a remote island landscape known for its wide horizons, changing weather, dramatic skies, and strong sense of place.

It is a landscape that is constantly shifting, not only seasonally but from hour to hour, and that sense of movement has become an important influence on my painting.

Over the past few months, I have suffered artist burnout and “artistic block”

But since arriving here, I see and feel the colours again .

My artistic ideas have become more closely connected to the landscape and everyday life of the islands.

I am working on creating colourful, expressive paintings inspired by atmosphere, colour, and feeling rather than strict realism.

My subjects now include Hebridean landscapes and seascapes, stormy skies and shifting weather, and those little quiet scenes of island life.

Alongside the landscape itself, I am also interested in the everyday presence of Uist life, including people, the sheep, crofting scenes, and the small details that define the rhythm of the islands.

Living in Uist, you soon notice the light changes quickly, the weather can shift within minutes, and the landscape itself feels alive and responsive.

I have stepped away from previous commissioned wedding painting work in order to focus on this new direction, which feels more closely aligned with where I am living and the work I want to create.

Alongside my studio practice, I also plan to offer informal creative painting sessions in Uist.

These are relaxed sessions designed for all abilities and are focused on enjoying creativity in a social environment rather than formal instruction.

If you would like to view my work, enquire about a painting, or follow my developing practice here in the islands, you can find more information through my website.
